After our hike we decided we had to stop for our first shave ice. Our guidebook told us that the best on the island was at Jo-Jos Shave Ice, which we had past on the way up the canyon, so thats where we headed on the way back down. We ordered one of their recommended flavors which had mango, orange, pineapple (I think..?) over macadamia nut ice cream. YUM! It was delicious and totally hit the spot.
Heading back toward town, Katie wanted to check out Glass Beach. Our book said that it was a former dumpsite and that the waves had pounded tons of glass into tiny pieces. We weren't really sure what to expect but were definitely thrilled at what we saw. It was quite literally a beach of tiny glass pebbles. Absolutely amazing! We really wished that we could have taken a handful back home with us.
Also while on the beach a funny thing happened (no pictures to document it...you'll see why). There was a rooster stuck up in a tree and a little dog (a terrier, just like Deiab) was barking at it while his owner was throwing rocks trying to knock it out. We weren't sure if he was doing this to save the rooster or what, but we soon found out. He finally knocked it out and his dog started chasing it around while the family rooted them on. The dog finally got the rooster. I didn't think he had killed it, but Katie said she saw the boy picking it up and throwing its limp body into the grass. We were both actually hoping they planned on catching the rooster so they could eat it. I mean, come on, its still chicken, and lived a whole lot happier life than the ones you buy at a supermarket did. But I guess that was not their plan. Maybe the plan was to help kill off some of the chickens that have taken over the island, or maybe it was to exercise their dog. Either way, we couldn't really fault them for it since we'd happily kill off some of the geese taking over Portland if we could!!!
